Levo vs Mole, the mo command line cleaner
Mole is a free, open-source command line tool. You run mo in Terminal to clean caches, uninstall apps, look at disk use and check your Mac’s status. If you live in a terminal, it’s a good tool, and it’s nicely scriptable.
The short version
- Mole has the commands. It cleans what it has rules for, in the terminal, when you run it.
- Levo has a menubar window, your agent’s judgement and a guard, so you see every item and tick what goes.
What’s different
- Where you use it. Mole is a command you remember to run. Levo sits in the menubar, watches your limits and tells you when something needs attention, with the list ready.
- What it knows. Mole’s cleaning is based on a set of rules that ship with it. Levo starts with a list of known tools and then asks your agent about everything else, so an unusual tool’s cache doesn’t need a new release.
- What you see before it deletes. Levo lists every row with its size and the reason it’s safe, and you untick anything you want to keep. A command line tool can show a dry run, but you read it as text.
- Safety net. Levo’s guard checks every item again right before it goes: open files, running apps, git work in progress, live agent sessions, recent changes. It can move what you clean to the Trash if you turn that on, and uninstalling an app can be put back for a day.
- Memory, CPU and GPU. Levo shows the processes behind them and your agent says what can be quit.
- Cost. Mole is free. Levo’s watching and suggestions are free, with two free cleanups, then a lifetime licence for 2 Macs.
Where Mole is the better fit
- You want everything in a script or in a cron job.
- You want open source you can read and change.
- You’d rather have no menubar app running.
Levo has a command line too
Levo includes a small levo command for setting it up and reading its state: status, analyse, findings and more, with --json for scripts. It never deletes, quits or cleans. That stays a click in Levo.
