The agent test fails (“Exit 1”)
The Test in Settings › Agent gives your agent a tiny task, to check it works with Levo. When it fails, the result says what went wrong and what to try. Most of the time the fix takes a minute.
“Didn’t answer”, with Exit code 1
Your agent started and then stopped without giving Levo an answer. Hover over the result to see the exit code. Exit 1 almost always means the agent isn’t signed in, or wants something from you that it can’t ask for in the background.
- Open Terminal and start your agent:
claude, codex, geminior whichever you use. - If it asks you to sign in, accept a prompt, or trust a folder, do that now.
- Quit the agent, go back to Levo and press Test again.
The other messages
- Not installed. Levo can’t find the command. Install the agent, then click the circular arrow next to Test to look again. If it’s in an unusual place, choose a custom command.
- Not signed in. Sign in to the agent in Terminal, as above.
- Out of usage. Your plan or credits ran out. Wait for it to reset, or add credits.
- Busy. The provider is rate-limiting. Try again in a few minutes.
- Model not available. The model you picked isn’t on your plan. Choose Default or another model.
- Didn’t start. The agent refused its command line, usually an old version. Update the agent. For a custom command, check it.
- Stopped by macOS. Open the agent once in Terminal. macOS may be waiting for you to allow something.
- Timed out. The agent took longer than Time per run. Try again, or raise it in Settings › Agent.
Still failing
- Make sure the agent works on its own: in Terminal, ask it something simple and see that it answers.
- Update the agent to its latest version. Levo’s presets follow current command lines.
- Try another agent. Any of the supported ones works, and you can switch in the same pane.
- Using a custom command? It needs
{prompt_file}and, if the CLI supports MCP,{mcp_config}. Without MCP, the CLI has to print its answer as a JSON block between markers.
From the command line
Levo’s helper shows the same thing. Run levo agents to list what it found and levo setup --agent claude (or your agent’s name) to choose it and run the test.
